Preliminary Rounds - Match #3: L vs Izaya Orihara
Round 1: Intelligence
In this first round I will be analysing the intelligence of two of the smartest anime characters known to the Anime Universe: L, the most brilliant detective in the world and Izaya Orihara, an information broker living within the city of Ikebukuro, with the records that these two hold there’s no telling who will become the superior character.
L is a very intellectually gifted Japanese/British young adult who is most well known as the greatest detective in the world, solving the most difficult cases that were thought to be unsolvable. L tends to second-guess everything he is presented with and is also good at deceiving others in terms of his goals and thoughts. He is also willing to take drastic measures to solve a case, such as: having and inmate on death row pose as himself on live TV in order to draw out a criminal or even risking the life of a fellow police officer in a similar manner. However regardless of his unorthodox and risky methods it proves to be the most effective one to make in the end, L also shows no emotion within his facial expressions which tend to make it difficult for others to decipher his true motives or personality, this also stands as an advantage to him as it masks his plans and keeps his enemies in the dark. L enjoys to consume a multiple variety of sweets during his investigations and in everyday life in general, he also maintains a strange posture slouching when he stands and even sitting in a strange manner, L has explained several times that these characteristics are in the hopes to increase his deductive skills and his deception on people. Whenever L is faced with a theory he plans to test it in real life and deduce whether or not it will aid him in his investigations. L is a very calm and calculated individual and even though he fell victim to the massacre of the God-like Kira, he managed to settle his score with the inclusion of Near and Mello, his pre-planned successors who had taken over his case after his death and managed to bring Kira to justice in the end, proving that he was the true genius behind the grand scheme of Death Note and cemented his legacy as being “The World’s Greatest Detective”.
Izaya Orihara is a cunning and manipulative individual who works as an informant and resides within Ikebukuro, Japan. He is well known for being involved in the most heinous crime and gang related activity that goes on within the city, Izaya has a habit of placing people into unorthodox and sometimes life threatening situations just so he can see their reactions to the event. He has stating that he loves the human race but shares no personal love connection with anyone, not even his own family. He does share an intense rivalry with Shizuo Heiwajima, the strongest character in their series Durarara! And constantly provokes him as this brings interest and enjoyment to Izaya but manages to infuriate Shizuo. Izaya expresses a cocky and sadistic personality. Izaya loves to manipulate and toy with people’s emotions as he gains enjoyment from it.
Izaya’s intellect is vast and wide as he uses it to manipulate the events and actions that occur within his city, causing multiple conflicts within people that lead to chaotic circumstances. As L uses his intellect to solve cases, deduce the outcome of an event and sometimes detect when a person is lying, however which mind is more superior? Izaya’s intellect aids him deadly deception but his overall knowledge and deductive reason cannot compare the mind of the great L, as Izaya’s job is to simply know everything whereas L’s job and more or less hobby is to uncover everything, which gives L more effort as he uses his mind to deduce certain things unlike Izaya who simply knows due to his job and not his mind, Izaya has to research the whereabouts and activities of others whereas L can deduce a person’s mental state and predict their every action with his mind alone. Izaya has never seen to deduce or uncover anything with his mind and instead uses technological resources to find out, which is lazier compared to L, though with the information Izaya possess he uses it to manipulate things to work in his favour, but with that being said L’s intellect far surpasses that of Izaya. I agree that Izaya is superior in manipulation which makes L the victor in knowledge and intellect.
Round 2: Hand-to-Hand Combat
If you have seen both Death Note and Durarara! Then many of you already know or are expecting who is going to win, and I completely agree with you 100%. Between Izaya and L there’s no question that when it comes to hand-to-hand combat Izaya has him beat hands down, through the majority of Durarara! Izaya is placed in many confrontations usually escaping through the use of his words however when faced up against Shizuo Heiwajima he never cowers from a fight. Izaya the smartest character in his Anime share a vicious and heated rivalry with the strongest character in his Anime Shizuo, in which they constantly fight each other especially shown in the final episode. Izaya shows more of his skills in combat being able to stand on equal ground against Shizuo, L however has only known to be in one fight against Light Yagami in which the two are handcuffed together, L does shows skills in close quarter combat with his kicks as fans have rumoured L to be somewhat skillful in capoeira. With all these aspects its fairly easy to say that Izaya would murder if not annihilate L in a fight.
Round 3: 1v1 Situation
Scenario: Izaya has left the city of Ikebukuro in pursuit of other endeavours and instead settles down within the Kanto Region of Japan, he uses his resources and acquires a job as an information broker for the city. He soon starts to manipulate behind the scenes and toys with the many residents of the Kanto Region; he begins his human experiments again by abducting teenage girls, saving them then placing their life in their hands, and every girl he kidnaps decide to commit suicide and jump off a building, this catches the attention of famous detective L, as he decides to move to the Kanto Region to investigate. L announces the world of his presence without showing his face or his true voice and tells Japan that he will apprehend the criminal behind these so called “suicides”, Izaya full of confidence takes this as mere garbage and continues his experiments.
A few days pass and L begins to fit the pieces together, he discovers that each girl who commit suicide disappear from plain sight hours before their supposed death and hypothesises that they are abducted in some manor beforehand and decides to send a teenager out in public at night as bait to draw the kidnapers out. The police department don’t agree with his methods but are insisted to follow it, soon enough the girl is not kidnapped and the plan fails. He then starts to link the sources of communication that each girl had and ended up finding each one talking with a strange user online discussing suicide thoughts, L realizes that this user could be the person he is looking for. He then tracks the IP address of the user and finds it lead to a corporate building, he sends police in only to find a chess board with odd pieces on it. As L waits in his room staring at his computer screen he turns around to find Izaya standing over him, it was revealed that Izaya used his resources as an info broker and tracked the source of L’s video announcement to the world and had recently found his location, L expecting this would happen snaps his fingers as Watari arrives on the scene with a sniper pointed to Izaya, Izaya realizing he is cornered desperately throws a knife towards Watari and he shoots, the knife hits the gun upwards causing the bullet to miss Izaya’s head as he flees the scene. L informs Watari to call for reinforcements as he tracks Izaya down, they both then stand toe to toe in a parking lot, Izaya then threatens to kill L after outsmarting him however L is not fazed and instead stands preparing for a fight. The two begin to fight while Izaya blasting with his foray of punches, L is knocked to the ground; Izaya closes in for the kill knife until L springs up and kicks Izaya in the face, L then showcases a quantity of amazing kicks in which Izaya evades all of them. L realizes that Izaya is a very powerful individual, and begins to rethink his strategy. Izaya however attempts to converse with L and try to toy with his emotions as he slowly starts to corner him, L then responds that he cannot be manipulated and that stalling him will not work. Izaya then decides to pull out his knife and stabs L in the chest, however it is revealed that L kept a box of chocolates under his shirt and whacks Izaya across the face with it. As L walks towards Izaya on the floor, Izaya reveals a spare knife in his back pocket and throws it to L, L narrowly dodges the knife however Izaya then picks up the knife that was whacked from his hands earlier and uses it to stab L in the chest. L then utters his last words that he will be waiting for the day that Izaya meets a foe that will eventually defeat him and thanks Watari for his loyal services. Izaya begins to laugh manically over L’s dead body as Watari arrives too late, Izaya bids farewell and escapes with a smile on his face.
